In 2022, there was an estimated 249 million malaria cases globally and 608000 malaria deaths in 85 countries as per the World Health Organization (WHO). The African region disproportionately carries a high share of the global malaria burden with 94% of the cases (233 million) and 95% (580000) of malaria deaths. 

MALARIA YOUTH INNOVATION CHALLENGE

INTRODUCTION: In 2022, there was an estimated 249 million malaria cases globally and 608000 malaria deaths in 85 countries as per the World Health Organization (WHO). The African region disproportionately carries a high share of the global malaria burden with 94% of the cases (233 million) and 95% (580000) of malaria deaths.  In Uganda, particularly in the rural areas there is a time lag in real time data collection and reporting by the Village Heath Teams (VHTs).  Are you enthusiastic about creating a difference in the available interventions by providing long term solutions to reduce the burden of malaria in Uganda? Do you have groundbreaking innovative ideas that could overturn these statistics? 

The Malaria Youth Champions Uganda in collaboration with Think IT presents to you an opportunity to showcase your ideas and develop them into long term solutions.

OBJECTIVE: To harness a tech enabled approach to improve real time data reporting from rural areas in Uganda.

ELIGIBILITY: The challenge is open to youths in Uganda aged 18-30 years that have great interest and motivation to add efforts in a fight against malaria. Youths from different academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply irrespective of the academic line. Both group and individual applications are encouraged.

COMPETITION FORMAT

Phase 1: Initial stage. Participants are invited to submit the ideas in form of a video (1 minute maximum) explaining the innovative idea. These ideas should be limited to:

Technology. This should focus on an innovative approach or technology that can promote easy dissemination and fast reporting of data concerning malaria. This approach should be applicable in a low income setting with particular interest in rural areas. 

Final stage: All applications submitted shall be reviewed and subjected to evaluation by experienced judges. 

A CASH PRIZE TOTAL OF $1000 WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THE TOP THREE PARTICIPANTS

First Position: $500

Second Position: $300

Third Position: $200

Top three participants will be mentored to have their projects fully implemented.
